Premier League: Chelsea overcome Liverpool hurdle

Chelsea took a huge step towards the Premier League title as they saw off Liverpool with a 2-0 win at Anfield.

Liverpool started the game well but were stunned when Steven Gerrard played a terrible backpass (in similar style to the one he played for his country against France in 2004) to let Didier Drogba through on goal and give Chelsea the lead. Conspiracy theorists will have their thoughts as many Liverpool fans had wanted Chelsea to win in order to stop rivals Manchester United claiming the title, but on the pitch, the Blues were much the better side.

Salomon Kalou should have had a penalty when he appeared to be tripped by Lucas just before the break, but referee Alan Wiley waved away the claims, much to the annoyance of Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti.

He didn't have to wait long for the game to be made safe though as Nicolas Anelka crossed well for Frank Lampard to bundle the ball between Pepe Reina's legs. Liverpool offered little by way of resistance and Chelsea held their lead to move four points clear at the top of the league, with Manchester United due to play Sunderland later in the day.
